What is coaching?
Coaching is now employed as one of the most effective
leadership styles and tools for management.
Coaching aligns with a principle of continuous professional
and personal development. In business internationally,
it is now an accepted form of development with high return
on investment. It acts as a powerhouse
to identify areas for development, set
goals and stay motivated to achieve them.
Coaching is a one to one relationship and usually
lasts for 6 – 12 sessions over an extended period of time
(e.g. 3-6 months). Usually meetings are face to face, but coaching
can be conducted over the telephone or online.
A coach is not an expert who will fix your problems, rather they
are experienced in facilitation processes tailored
to your individual style of learning.
When is coaching helpful?
When people get to the top of their field,
it can be hard to ask for help as it often hooks into our personal
myths around weakness or fears
of inadequacy.
Leaders need to be visionary
and grounded, able to steer the organisation through
continual change, whilst encouraging
and motivating their teams. It can be hard to continually
balance inspiration with humility,
and the challenge is to stay consistent. Honest
and open feedback so essential to peak performance
can sometime be hard to solicit.
