What do
you do when your customers threaten your employee’s wellbeing?
How do you deal with violence or bullying in the workplace?
In June 2003, the HSE launched
new
guidelines for dealing with excessive stress
at work.
As specialists in wellbeing in
business, we have experience to help individuals
and organisations reconcile and process
violent, abusive or traumatic incidents at work, which if left unsupported,
can lead to excessive stress.
Reconcile “to restore
or bring back to friendship or union: to bring to agreement or contentment:
to pacify” Chambers 20th Century Dictionary
“There is strong
evidence that workplace counselling has a beneficial effect on
psychological symptoms and well being, and on sickness absence”
*
Exposure to violence, physical
or emotional, has a biochemical, physiological
and emotional affect on an individual. Being exposed
to excessive stress, over time, the body goes into
fear overdrive and if left unattended
can be like a time bomb which may result in serious
behavioural, physical and psycho-emotional problems.
Some symptoms of this can include:
- » flash backs
- » nightmares
- » depression
- » mood swings
- » aggressive behaviour
- » de-motivation
- » substance abuse.
Like a business in trouble, the
individual simply does not have the resources to
meet the demands of their overwhelmed system and
this is when pro-active attention is vital.
At Wholeheart Works, we are trained
psychotherapists and specialists in helping people
rediscover their resources and move towards balance
and reconciliation.
We offer a programme called Reconciliation
Counselling, which brings a pro-active approach to wellbeing
in business, we can provide:
- » information packs to help
individuals understand the effects of excessive stress and offer
suggestions for dealing with it.
- » One to One counselling/coaching
sessions
- » “Recognising Burnout”
workshops
- » Facilitated support groups
- » Empathic Listening workshops
for managers
- » Stress
Management consultation and packages
What are the benefits?
The financial benefits of such
interventions in the work place are now well documented.
- » Counselling has been proven
to reduce levels of sickness & absence by 25 – 50%
in some organisations.*
- » As an organization that
actively cares, you will be following best practice guidelines,
thus reducing your liability in claims.
- » Lower turnover of staff
as depression and morale is dealt with.
- » Staff learn new skills
for responding to and dealing with difficult situations
- » Creating an organisation
that publicly says NO to violence, abusive behaviour and excessive
stress
- » Whilst important to the
bottom line, we believe that an essential benefit is simply
knowing that your organisation takes the action to care.
- » Most importantly, in the
worse case scenario the effects of excessive stress can lead
people to depression, despair and attempted suicide. By pro-actively
caring for them you will know that your organisation provides
the best it can to avoid these situations.
